Man sentenced to nearly 9 years in prison after 2023 road rage shooting, officials say

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) – The Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office said a man was sentenced after pleading guilty to multiple charges.

On September 30, 2023, officials said deputies were called to a single shot fired at a vehicle heading south with two occupants on I-26 near mile marker 39.

Before the shooting, the driver noticed 29-year-old Zachary Desmond Stewart was driving aggressively and pulled out his cell phone to film it. The video also shows Stewart shooting at the victim’s car from his vehicle.

Stewart was later arrested following the crash in Henderson County. Police found a .380-caliber pistol in his vehicle.

No one was physically injured as a result of his actions, officials said.

During the trial, Stewart pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into an occupied moving vehicle and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He was sentenced to almost 9 years in prison.
