Mobile fire and rescue service warns of increased risk of forest fires

THEODORE, Ala. (WKRG) — Dry conditions are increasing the risk of wildfires in Mobile County and beyond. Mobile firefighters are on duty in case the situation gets out of control.

The Edward A. Berger Fire Station in Theodore is one of the places in Mobile that has a mix of suburban and rural areas. This is an area where the likelihood of grass fires increases as dry weather continues.

To fight wildfires, this fire station has one of the few brushes in the department. A brush truck can squeeze into tighter areas where there is a lot of brush or trees compared to a regular fire truck.

There has been no precipitation in this area for more than a month. There is an increased risk of fire this time of year, and there are regulations in place to limit the likelihood of fires occurring in the Mobile area.

“You can get burned on the grill. Maybe you cook outside the home. This is allowed. Maybe if you have a purchased fire pit and visit it regularly, those things are allowed, but you are never allowed to burn debris or trash within city limits,” said Jeff Haller with Mobile Fire Rescue.

Last week, the Alabama Forestry Commission issued fire warnings for 22 counties..
This includes all Alabama counties in News 5’s coverage area, including Mobile and Baldwin.
Outdoor burning is not prohibited in unincorporated areas, but is not recommended.
