Man found guilty of defrauding UConn out of more than ,000

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) – A man has been found guilty of fraud using stolen bank information and false names.

The man was Dixon Alorwornu, 35, a Ghanaian citizen living in Greenwich. He is also known as “Dixon Al”.

Officials said Alorwornu used other people’s names, fake Social Security numbers and fake email addresses to submit two applications to non-degree programs at UConn.

According to evidence at trial, in December 2017, Alorwornu used stolen American Express cards to fund two student accounts that received more than $62,000 in fraudulent withdrawals.

In January 2018, officials said Alorwornu withdrew from courses and demanded the money he contributed to the university be returned.

UConn subsequently transferred tens of thousands of dollars to bank accounts controlled by Alorwornu, according to the court.

The investigation revealed that the email accounts he used to defraud the University of Connecticut were also used to defraud other universities.

The jury found Alorvorna guilty of two counts of wire fraud. Judge Sarala V. Nagala scheduled his sentencing for February 19.

Alorvornu was released on $50,000 bail pending sentencing.
