Sudbury News: Group seeks help to care for dozens of rescued puppies

Pet Save Sudbury recently took in more than 30 puppies as part of a rescue mission that saw 44 dogs from northern Manitoba need new homes.

The organization is now in desperate need of volunteers and donations. Puppies need help from the community, from walks to baths and, of course, training.

“We supply everything,” said Jill Pesso of Pet Save Sudbury.

“We’re just looking for people to… open their homes. The more homes we can open, the more we can save.”

Denise Cochrane – Founder Flights for Hopean organization that raises funds for flights to aid rescue efforts.

Cochrane and several other partners coordinated a rescue operation aimed at getting the most vulnerable dogs out before winter weather set in.

“Many of these international countries are not coping with the cold temperatures that our Canadian stray dogs face,” she said.

“So that’s… what we’re really trying to get across is that we need help here in Canada. These dogs not only go hungry, get sick, or get injured. They also freeze to death.”

Cochrane said the problem can be solved, but not just through rescue groups.

“The best way to achieve these goals is through government support,” she said.

“We need permanent spay and neuter clinics. We need continued access to health care in all of these different areas. (I) education. (In) many of these remote communities, education is key.”

Pesso said donations of towels, bedding, dog food and toys are greatly appreciated. They can be dropped off at Pet Save in Lively or the charity shop on Notre Dame Avenue.
