India’s GitHub community grows 28% to 17 million developers

More than 17 million developers in India are building GitHubplatform for developers based on Microsoft Copilot. This represents 28% growth in 2024, making the country one of the fastest-growing developer communities in the world, GitHub said in a statement.

The American company also reported that India ranks second in the world in the number of users of GitHub Education, participants in public projects on generative artificial intelligence and open source contributions.

GitHub Education is a portal that provides resources for students and educators to learn and teach software development.

Octoverse’s latest report for 2024 shows growth generative AI activity in India, showing that artificial intelligence has moved beyond the 2023 hype phase, with several developers and firms prioritizing results over experimentation.

“Our latest Octoverse report confirms that the Indian developer community is the fastest growing developer community on the planet. India’s rise as a global tech titan is now inexorable. Not only this, but India’s rapidly growing developer community is using AI to create AI in record numbers. , making it increasingly likely that the next great multinational will come from India,” said GitHub CEO Thomas Domke.

The results also show that India becomes the second largest developer community contributing to public generative AI projects on GitHub, just behind the US, up 79% year-on-year. In addition, the country saw a 95% year-on-year increase in deposits into these projects, ranking third in the world behind the US and Hong Kong SAR.

The report indicates that India’s developer community is contributing to society through open source projects such as ERPNext, which has the highest number of contributions in the For Good First Issue category on GitHub. It connects participants with projects aimed at solving social problems and supporting sustainable development.

Additionally, open source communities in India are using GitHub Copilot, an AI-powered coding tool, to develop digital solutions. An example is the Open Healthcare Network, an open source organization dedicated to improving the delivery and management of health care.

The company predicts that India will overtake the US to become the world’s largest developer community by 2028.

GitHub also unveiled major updates to its Copilot-powered developer platform during its tenth annual developer conference, GitHub Universe ’24.

The company said Copilot is evolving into a multi-model platform, allowing developers to choose from leading AI models such as Claude 3.5 Sonnet from Anthropic, Gemini 1.5 Pro from Google and GPT-4o, o1-preview and o1-mini from OpenAI. provide developers with advanced coding capabilities.

The company also introduced GitHub Spark, an artificial intelligence tool for building personal, customizable and rich web applications entirely in natural language.

GitHub is a developer platform powered by Microsoft Copilot to build, scale, and deliver secure software. The platform is used by more than 100 million developers, including more than 90% of Fortune 100 companies. More than 77,000 organizations currently use GitHub Copilot.
