Gunny and Barbour are back with another dreamy collaboration

Gunny and Barbour are back with another dreamy collaboration

High, low, minimalist, maximalist – half the fun of fashion is its duality and the imaginary worlds it can create. For example, what happens when you combine a high-energy, megawatt Danish fashion house known for its airy silhouettes and vibrant prints with a 130-year-old British heritage brand?

Gunny and Barbour released today third collection from their ongoing partnership. The 9-piece capsule, featuring carefully selected outerwear and accessories, is perfect for a brisk stroll through the English countryside or a dreamy horse-drawn carriage ride across the grassy plains of Denmark.

Some standout character looks include two stunning oversized scarves, a wide belted trenchcoat, and a duffle coat repurposed as a cape with plaid patches and an oversized Peter Pan collar (Gunny’s signature).

“Some of the silhouettes are very iconic to Barbour: cords, collars and crinkles,” says Barbour womenswear director Nicola Brown. “But it’s those curves, the proportions, the hardware with a little hint of green that really makes Ganni stand out.”

If you’ve been following along, you know that these two brands released their first collection back in 2022, followed by their second in 2023. Each iteration continues to build on key Barbour outerwear silhouettes, spliced, patched and printed. an explosion of texture and color that captures Gunny’s cool downtown aesthetic.

“I think what I really like about collaboration is that when you expand (it) to do more, you get to know each other better,” says Gunny creative director Ditte Reffstrup. “So the first one is always a little scary. You’re really afraid to cross the line. And I think the more you get to know each other, the calmer you become and the creative process becomes easier.”

As connections between brands strengthen, they also grow. The Ganni x Barbour 3.0 collaboration introduces two new silhouettes: Embellished with patches. duffle coat And raincoat with belt. Inspired by a Barbour archival piece dating back to 1934, the trench has special meaning for Refstrup, who recalls the first time she saw the quintessential fall coat worn by Meryl Streep in Kramer vs. Kramer and it made a lasting impression. “I’m from the countryside in Denmark and no one wore this. So for me it’s a very iconic fashion item. It’s something you can have in your closet forever.”

It’s one of her favorites, along with the parka, which is a replica of Barbour’s Durham jacket. “I don’t have a driver’s license, I just ride a bike,” Refstrup says. “So I need a very practical coat. And I love it because—I’m always listening to music or podcasts—I can put on my headphones and put on a big hoodie and I don’t even need rain pants because they’re so long. There’s a sporty vibe to it and I like to combine it with a very feminine style.”

This writer had the opportunity to visit Copenhagen, Ganni’s birthplace, for a few days to experience the collection in its birthplace. For someone who prefers more traditional silhouettes and muted prints, the duffle coat was the perfect middle ground. It’s warm on its own, but roomy enough to comfortably layer a thick cardigan underneath for extra insulation. As we made our way through Copenhagen’s landmarks, including the famous Jaesgorsborg Dyrehave deer park overlooking Øresund, I was well protected from the cold air, focusing less on the drop in temperature and more on the fresh breeze and the tranquility of my surroundings. — as the sun danced across the trees as birds gathered and two deer were spotted from afar. Look, dreamy.

Showcasing their shared commitment to sustainability, every jacket in the collection can be repaired through Barbour’s Wax for Life program. “Whether it’s part of the Barbour range or a collaboration, we will always offer this service on the jackets we design together,” says Brown. “They are here to last forever, passed down from generation to generation, repaired and remade so they are never thrown away.”

And they will be worn out. Back in the States, I found myself reaching for my coat or patiently waiting for the next cold morning to put it on. Not every coat can make me feel elegant or ready to embrace whatever elements throw my way. Moreover, no other coat could carry me back to that gentle hill where time seemed to stand still, even for a moment. Everything was surprisingly calm until the cold got worse and it was time to button up and move on.
