Residents of Roanoke and Troutville were found guilty of involvement in the events of January 6

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Two men from Roanoke and Troutville were found guilty Tuesday for their roles in the Jan. 6 breach of the Capitol, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

Peter Willey, 37, of Roanoke, and Ethan Mauck, 31, of Troutville were found guilty of a felony count of obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct in the Capitol building. The men will be sentenced on February 28, 2025.

According to the Department of Justice, Willey and Mauk attended the “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, D.C. on January 6, 2021, and can be seen in photos and videos entering restricted areas of the U.S. Capitol building.

The Justice Department says the footage shows Willey and Moke walking toward barricades with bike racks and toward a police line in Lower West Square, where there was a violent struggle between rioters and law enforcement.

Law enforcement then used pepper spray on the rioters, and Mauk could be seen rubbing his eyes in frustration before picking up a fallen police bike rack and throwing it at an officer, the Justice Department said.

According to the Department of Justice, at approximately 1:40 p.m., Willey and other rioters began moving a large sign on wheels with a metal frame to use as a battering ram toward the police line and barricades.

The Department of Justice says that at about 2:50 p.m., Willie and Moke enter the Lower West Terrace tunnel, where some of the “most violent attacks on law enforcement” took place, and security footage shows rioters, including Moke and Willie, press against the police line. in unison.

At approximately 2:55 p.m., the DOJ says Willey grabbed two police shields from another rioter and handed them to rioters near the police line, then passed a large black speaker to other rioters in the tunnel. The speaker was eventually thrown into the police line by other rioters, the DOJ adds.

According to the Department of Justice, both Willey and Mauk emerged from the tunnel at approximately 3:04 p.m., where they can be seen in the crowd outside the tunnel watching as other rioters dragged the two officers into the crowd.

The FBI arrested the two men on August 31, 2023.
