BAN vs SA 2024/25, BAN vs SA Second Test Match Report, 29 October – 2 November 2024

Bangladesh 38 out of 4 (Mahmudul 10, Rabada 2–8, Maharaj 1–4) South Africa 575 for 6 December (de Zorzi 177, Stubbs 106, Mulder 105*, Taijul 5-198) for 537 runs

Vian Mulder became South Africa’s third maiden centurion in the Chattogram Test as the visitors completely dominated the second day. They declared at 575 for 6, with Mulder, Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs scoring centuries before their players bowled out Bangladesh’s top three in the first six overs.
The hosts were reduced to 38 for 4 at stump as their recent weaknesses with the ball showed even on the playable Zahoor Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium pitch. Even the award of five penalties, since the judges concluded that Senuran Muthusamy damaging the pitch, failed to inspire Bangladesh.
Kagiso RabadaRecently ranked number one Test bowler, Shadman Islam strangled leg for a duck in the first over. Rabada then removed Zakir Hasan, also behind, for 2 runs in his next over.

Dane Paterson came into play in the sixth over when Mahmudul Hasan Joy chased a wide ball and fell to Aiden Markram at second slip. Keshav Maharaj gifted the beauty to night spotter Hasan Mahmud, who missed the shot completely and scored 3 points. It capped a stunning day for South Africa, who dominated from start to finish.

While the first day belonged to de Zorzi and Stubbs, the second day was dedicated to Mulder’s centenary and his partnership with the Mutuses. The pair added 152 runs for an unbroken seventh-wicket stand. breaking the South African record for that wicket against Bangladesh in the previous Test in Dhaka, where Mulder and Kyle Verrein added 119.

Mulder and Muthusamy came together as Bangladesh suddenly gained momentum in the first session of the day. Taijul Islam picked up David Bedingham, De Zorzi and Verrenne in successive overs to give the home team some breathing space. Bedingham missed one kick to gain the ball, while de Zorzi and Verraine also missed a kick to gain lbw.

Taijul completed his five before Naheed Rana sent off Ryan Rickelton. At the time, Bangladesh were hoping to complete South Africa’s collection early, but Mulder and Muthusamy led South Africa to a huge score. Mulder was generally good on the ground, hitting all his eight fours and four sixes between long and mid. Muthusamy fed Mulder regularly, but also hit the ball deftly.

Muthusamy hit two sixes at long off, barring a four at mid-on, fine leg and back point. His marked boundary between the sheets took him to his first Test fifty.

Taijul was picked by the Bangladesh bowlers with his 14th five-wicket haul, but it was also the team’s most expensive five as he made 198 runs. Nahid took a wicket, but Hasan Mahmood and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were disappointed with their wicketless efforts.
