Glenn Irvine: First family for 11-time North West 200 winner to give up road racing

Glenn Irwin says his family’s interests are the “absolute reason” for his decision to retire from road racing.

The 34-year-old Carrickfergus rider is retiring from road racing after winning his last 11 Superbike races at the North West 200.

“I’ve met all the requirements, I’ve got trophies and I’m here on the other side,” Irwin said.

“I had my day: I have three beautiful children, and the world is constantly changing. I believe they need a father in their life.”

“You can never guarantee anything in life. My family is my absolute reason.”

Irwin, who will now focus on the British Superbike Championship, competed at the North West 200 on Wednesday.

His Superbike winning streak began in 2017 and he has fond memories of competing in international road racing.

“These seven years here have brought some of the happiest memories of my life: road racing is the best sport in the world.

“But I think there always has to be time. I’ve accomplished more here than I ever thought I would.”
