List of the 10 best on Disney+: streamer unveils popularity ranking

Disney adds a new feature to Disney+ this will be familiar to Netflix subscribers.

The entertainment giant is adding a list of the 10 best movies on Disney+, which will highlight popular films and series on the streaming platform. Notably, the list will be different for different subscribers: Parental control settings will affect what is shown, as well as the inclusion of Hulu titles for Disney Bundle subscribers.

Likewise, users in different countries may have slightly different listings based on content availability.

Disney says it will determine what makes the list based on overall viewership at the episode and movie level, as well as other factors such as the growing popularity of new games.

When Hollywood Reporter looked at the top 10 list today, it was chock full of Halloween themed dishes like Hocus Pocus And Simpsons Treehouse of Horror special.

Discoverability has become one of the defining product issues in streaming, and while algorithmic recommendations are key, Top 10 lists or similar features designed to highlight popular content have also become popular. After all, people want to discuss things around the water cooler.

Netflix, for example, launched a top 10 list in 2020 and now publishes it on its website. Disney says it hopes its new roster will encourage “engagement and discovery.”
