Haley asks Trump skeptics to choose politics over “emotions”

PENNSBURG, PA— Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley called on Republicans to “take the emotion out of this election” by offering their support to the former president Donald Trump at a campaign stop.

Haley visited Pennsburg, a small town about an hour north of Philadelphia, to campaign for Senate candidate Dave McCormick, calling him a public servant who will help restore trust in Congress.

But she ended her speech with a message to those voters who were disappointed by Trump’s rhetoric. At the heart of the call was that Trump’s policies must outweigh any concerns about his character or temperament.

“We need to take the emotion out of this election and really think about the policies we want for our children and the next generation,” Haley told the audience. “This is our job.”

She later directly asked voters to support Trump, portraying it as a necessity for Republicans to win all the votes.

“We have to do more than just elect Dave McCormick. We must choose Donald Trump,” she said. “Because if Donald Trump wins Pennsylvania, Dave McCormick will win Pennsylvania.”

Haley has been making a pragmatic case for Trump since July, when she offered her “strong support” at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Since then, the two have formed an uneasy alliance, with Haley combining her support with public criticism of his campaign strategy. She told Fox News on Tuesday that Trump needs to tone down his “bromance and masculinity,” citing a speaker at his Madison Square Garden rally who appeared to compare Vice President Kamala Harris with a prostitute.

Haley can help Trump win back 160,000 Republicans who voted for her in the Pennsylvania primary in April. Some in Pennsburg on Wednesday favored Haley in the primary, with one saying Washington Equizor he refused to vote for Trump. Others said they now support the former president.

But Trump has not enlisted Haley’s help, despite her insistence that she is “ready” if he wants her to appear at events. So far, she has only provided her name for fundraising emails and text messages.

Haley’s appearance in Pennsylvania comes as Harris has staked her candidacy on winning Haley’s Republican base of support.

Earlier this month, Harris campaigned alongside former Rep. Liz Cheney, a prominent Republican critic of Trump, in suburban Pennsylvania and made symbolic gestures such as her pledge to appoint a Republican to her Cabinet.

Haley mentioned Harris only briefly in her Pennsburg speech. At one point, she questioned why McCormick’s Democratic opponent, Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), endorsed a presidential candidate who promised to “pack the court and get rid of the filibuster.”

Haley will give another speech on behalf of McCormick on Wednesday near Pittsburgh.
