Kyiv, Ukraine (AP) — Russian troops attacked a residential building in Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkov early Thursday, killing a 12-year-old boy and wounding scores of others.

Regional head Oleg Sinegubov said the boy was fatally wounded when the building was hit by a Russian 500-kilogram (1,100-pound) glide bomb.

“He was released from the rubble with severe head injuries and fractures,” Sinegubov wrote in his messenger. “Doctors carried out resuscitation measures for more than half an hour. Unfortunately, it was not possible to save the child.”

Interior Minister Igor Klimenko said at least 35 people were injured in the attack and others may still be trapped under the rubble, including a missing 15-year-old boy.

Russia is increasingly using powerful glide bombs to strike Ukrainian positions along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) line of contact and cities tens of kilometers (miles) from the front line. Kharkiv, a city of 1.1 million people, is about 30 kilometers (less than 20 miles) from the border.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called on the United States to allow Ukraine to use long-range American missiles to strike air bases deep in Russia that are used by planes carrying glide bombs. Washington has so far allowed only a few strikes near the border.

Zelensky repeated his demand on Thursday, posting a video showing a collapsed building with at least three floors destroyed and the rest heavily damaged.

“Partners see what happens every day,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram. “And in these conditions, each of their belated decisions means at least dozens, if not hundreds of such Russian bombs against Ukraine. Their decisions are the life of our people. Therefore, we must stop Russia together and do it with all possible force.”

On Thursday morning, Russia also fired 10 missiles of various types at the bridge over the Dniester estuary that connects the northern and southern parts of the Odessa region, the Ukrainian Air Force said, adding that only two of them were intercepted. The Air Force did not say whether the bridge was destroyed.

Russian forces also launched 43 exploding drones over at least nine regions of Ukraine; According to the Air Force, 17 planes were shot down, 23 were stranded and three flew back to Russian-controlled territory.

The head of the Kyiv city administration, Sergei Popko, said that debris from some of the drones intercepted over the capital fell in Podol, north of the city center, causing minor damage. According to Popko, there was only one day in October when the people of Kiev did not hear the air raid warning. In October, Kyiv heard an average of two air raids per day, repelling 20 actual air attacks aimed at the city.

Ukraine hit back with drone attacks on Thursday.

Authorities in the Russian-occupied Azov Sea city of Berdyansk reported a drone attack on the port early Thursday, saying three people were injured.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said air defenses shot down 21 Ukrainian drones over several regions and the Black Sea on Thursday.
