Kyambogo students go on strike after teachers refuse to release results

Students at Kyambogo University’s Soroti Study Center on Thursday morning protested against allegedly withheld results.

Students are accusing coaching center staff of delaying their results for more than two months, citing the government’s failure to pay government employees since last semester.

Isaac Opolot, one of the last students to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance, is unsure of his fate.

“Bushenyi, Kyambogo main campus has already been cleared in anticipation of the end of school from December 10th to 13th.th. So, what remains for us,” Opolot said.

Eriya Ilukor, a student offering a Bachelor of Education degree, condemned teachers for hiding results, while former guild head Joseph Erimai called on students to involve their parents in the protest as they feel the pain of paying fees.

“We are looking forward to calling our parents so that they can help us ask the university authorities why all this is happening,” Yerimai said.

Moses Ogwapit Ereu, manager of the Soroti Learning Center at Kyambogo University, suggested that external assessment makes it easier for teachers to maintain results.

“We have learned this and now we are going to set up a room where we will grade the work of no longer lecturers so that we can take the scripts to our homes,” he said, noting that the Soroti campus has more than 4,000 students and 73 teachers.

When asked to comment on the matter, Kyambogo University senior public relations officer Reuben Twinomujuni said: “The lecturers have hidden the results because they need the money, but we are doing our best to get them paid.”

He explained that they had not yet paid the lecturers, but would pay them, and asked the remaining lecturers to publish the results.

Twinomujuni attributed the “financial crisis” to the impact of Covid, adding that “during the recovery, we were operating 3 semesters ago, which strangled the resources of the institution.”

Additionally, he said the university has held discussions with the Treasury Department and there appears to be a breakthrough.

“All students will receive their results. There is no cause for concern,” said Twinomujuni. Monitor on Thursday.

About Kyambogo Soroti Training Center

Kyambogo University Soroti Training Center is among the training centers that were recently ordered to close by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) but have since continued to operate.

Kyambogo University Vice-Chancellor Professor Eli Katunguka said NCHE does not have the power to stop institutions from setting up training centres.

But NCHE insists that under Section 25 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 (UOTIA), a tertiary institution must first obtain NCHE approval before setting up new centers of learning, something Kyambogo University has failed to do since he opened the Soroti training center. in 2018.
