Withdraw the decision to open an OHCHR office in Dhaka: Hefazat

Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh today called on the interim government to retract its decision to allow the establishment of a UN Human Rights Commission (OHCHR) office in Dhaka.

In a statement, Mohibullah Babunagari, Amir of Hefazat-e-Islam, and party general secretary Sazedur Rahman said that during the fascist rule of Sheikh Hasina, countless human rights violations took place, including enforced disappearances, murders and, in particular, the Shapla massacre. -Chattare. Despite overwhelming evidence, the UN Human Rights Commission has not taken any significant action against Hasina’s government.

Instead, the UN appointed Hasina’s allegedly corrupt daughter Saima Wazed as WHO regional director last November, ignoring protests. Therefore, the villagers do not want such an “irresponsible” human rights organization to have an office in Dhaka, the statement said.

According to the statement, the rights of LGBTQ or gay people are a priority in UN human rights policy. However, as a Muslim-majority country, Bangladesh not only religiously and socially prohibits homosexuality, but also considers it a punishable offense under state law.

Allowing the UN human rights commission to open an office in Dhaka would be highly self-defeating, it said, adding that this new instability would further weaken the interim government.

On October 29, Social Welfare Advisor Sharmeen S. Murshid said that an office of the UN Human Rights Council would soon be opened in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, leaders of Islamic Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) called the decision “self-destructive”, saying it will promote homosexuality and people will resist it.

At a meeting held on October 29 in Puran Paltan, IAB Secretary General Yunus Ahmad said that there was no ethnic conflict in Bangladesh that would require the opening of a UN human rights office.
