Terrebonne and Lafourche could experience a wild Halloween night, forecaster says

Meteorologists say you may need an umbrella for Halloween, and law enforcement has other safety tips.

Terrebonne and Lafourche will have a 50% chance of thunderstorms between 1:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 31, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Phil Grigsby.

The rain will continue throughout the evening, he said. The day will be warm, with temperatures reaching 70 degrees and winds gusting 5 to 10 mph.

“Unfortunately, the best chance of rain is around Halloween,” Grigsby said. “Children may also need to carry an umbrella.”

Houma Police Department Chief Travis Theriot said the department is looking forward to another fun and safe Halloween. According to him, the department will allocate additional patrols. He advised parents to wear reflective clothing if possible, keep children close and check candy before children eat it.

Thibodaux Police Department Public Information Officer Clint Dempster said the department will release safety advisories later this week. Dempster offered similar advice to Theriot and added that the department urges families who receive candy that is not in its original packaging not to accept it. He said the department will have extra patrol officers from 6 to 8 p.m.

“Obviously, don’t take anything that’s not in its original packaging, if it’s homemade, something in an unsealed bag or something like that, obviously we encourage them not to take it,” Dempster said.
