Dog lover loses home in fire, community unites to care for pets

When the Northwestern Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the home last Wednesday evening, they encountered a large fire.

“Firefighters were able to extricate the elderly man from the home. He was breathing on his own but was transported in very critical condition,” said Fire Chief Wesley Cole of the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department.

“One of my neighbors called me. She said a family friend she went to school with had a bad fire and she knows I’m an animal lover. She said, “Will I go out and help the dogs?” said Moselle Hindle.

Mosel and others are now caring for seven to nine dogs that belonged to a 65-year-old man who is a true dog lover.

“His wife was not home at the time,” Mosel said. “She was actually taking care of her sick mother.”

While the homeowner clings to life, Mosel and others look after his injured dogs.

“You can tell they’re worried about what’s going on and where their owner is,” she said.

The Moselle, where dogs can be fed, is a 90-minute drive one way.

“The dogs need it,” she said.

Unfortunately, one of the dogs died in the fire.

“When one of the daughters saw this, she, of course, also burst into tears. It’s definitely hard to see,” Moselle said.

A couple of the dogs are up for adoption, but most will need time to recover.

“The goal is to earn their trust and find them a home,” Mosel said.
