The City Council intends to vote for the adoption of amendments to the current City Charter. If approved, the measures will go to the State Bond Commission to begin the process of bringing this issue to voters.

This latest proposal, which could come up for a vote during Tuesday’s council meeting, would require an election to be held on Saturday, March 29.

There will be three bylaw amendments on the ballot.

One of these amendments includes term limits for City Council members.

Here’s what the amendment says:

“Members of the City Council shall be eligible for re-election, except that no person elected to serve more than two and one-half terms as a City Council member for three consecutive terms, which service shall last for the term of office beginning on January 1, 2025 year or after that date, shall be elected to the City Council for another term.”

Here is the wording of the mayor’s term limits:

“The Mayor shall be elected in accordance with the laws of the State and serve a term of four (4) years. The term of office begins on July 1 of the year in which he is elected. (b) No person who has not been elected to the office of Mayor for more than two and one-half terms of three consecutive terms, such service being served during a term of office beginning on or after January 1, 2025, shall be elected Mayor for the next period.”
