Former PGA of America President Roger Warren is the leading candidate to become the next CEO of the PGA of America, according to two senior PGA officials with direct knowledge of the hiring process.

If appointed, Warren will succeed Seth Waugh, who resigned this summer after a six-year run. Kerry Hay, chief championship officer for the PGA of America, has served as interim CEO.

Warren, President Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina, served as president of the PGA of America from 2005 to 2006 and is a member of the association’s Hall of Fame. Among the finalists also vying for the job was Derek Sprague, another former PGA president who is now the PGA’s general manager, according to PGA sources. Warren did not respond to phone calls and emails from GOLF.com.

PGA of America spokesman Julius Mason said in an email: “When we have updated information, we will let you know.”

Waugh, who remains an adviser to the PGA of America, declined to comment.

A PGA of America spokesman said the association intends to name Waugh’s replacement before the PGA’s annual meeting, scheduled for Nov. 4-7 in Milwaukee. But the decision-making process was slowed by the association’s negotiations with another candidate, an executive at a leading golf equipment manufacturer. This candidate is no longer being considered.

If his appointment is officially announced, Warren, 74, will become one of the longest-serving CEOs of the PGA of America.

An Illinois native, Warren worked as a high school teacher and golf coach for nearly a decade before going into the golf course management business in his home state. In 2003, Warren was named director of golf at Kiawah Island Golf Resort and two years later became president of the resort. PGA sources said Warren has not yet signed a contract, but his role is expected to be finalized soon.
