LRE White Wing Ranch 179 MW Solar Power Plant Begins Operation

Leeward Renewable Energy (LRE) announced the completion and commencement of commercial operations of its White Wing Ranch solar project in Yuma County, Arizona, USA.

The 179 MW project is a significant addition to LRE’s portfolio, which currently has an operating capacity of over 3.3 GW.

White Wing Ranch, located on 1,400 acres of private land, is poised to deliver renewable energy to the main electrical grid through the 500 kV Hooodoo Wash distribution station.

The first of several projects planned by LRE in Yuma County, this solar project is the first large-scale deployment of American-made First Solar Series 7 photovoltaic modules.

These modules provide increased efficiency and reduced carbon emissions compared to traditional crystalline silicon (c-Si) panels.

The White Wing Ranch solar project uses land management practices to promote the restoration of natural desert ecosystems.

The project has a lifespan of more than 30 years and is expected to provide significant economic benefits to the local community and contribute significantly to property taxes in Yuma County.

LRE CEO Jason Allen said, “We are excited to begin operations at White Wing Ranch and support Verizon’s sustainability goals.

“We are excited about the future of renewable energy in the region and are committed to making a meaningful contribution to the community throughout the life of the project.”

The White Wing Ranch development was supported by Verizon Communications under a long-term power purchase agreement.

At the peak of construction, the project created over two hundred jobs and utilized Terabase Energy’s innovative Terafab technology.

Verizon Senior Vice President of Global Sourcing and Supply Chain and Chief Sustainability Officer James Gowen said, “White Wing Ranch is another example of our commitment to powering our operations with clean, renewable energy.

“LRE continues to be a great partner to work with as we continue to deliver on our commitment to protecting our planet and transitioning to a greener U.S. energy grid.”
