Manchester United ‘refuse to rule out re-signing star’ as Ruben Amorim watches closely | Football | Sport

Ruben Amorim may have already identified his first Manchester United contract with the Portuguese coach, who is reportedly a big fan of Benfica defender Alvaro Fernandez.

The 21-year-old was previously with United, joining the club as a teenager in 2020.

Carreras did not make any appearances for the Red Devils, having spent most of his time under contract with United on loan elsewhere.

He has played successfully for Preston North End, Granada and most recently Benfica, who joined on a permanent basis in the summer using a £5 million release clause.

But, according to GIVEMESPORTFernandes could be ready to return to Old Trafford immediately as his former club are rumored to be interested in exercising the left-back’s buyout clause.

Left-back is one of the areas that new coach Amorim will have to improve if United are to succeed, with both Tyrell Malasia and Luke Shaw suffering from injury.

Malacia has not appeared in a United shirt for over a year and Shaw last appeared in the Euro 2024 final for England against Spain.

If they did pursue Fernandes’ return, it would mean United would be forced to take a small hit on the Spaniard as his release clause is said to be around £16.7 million.

However, Amorim is said to be a player he roots for, having seen him up close while in charge of Benfica’s rivals Sporting.

And if the Spain Under-21 international continues to attract attention in the Portuguese league, it won’t be long before one of United’s European rivals comes along and signs him in his place.

The dynamic defender really fits the profile of the player United are targeting under their new owner INEOS, and Fernandes is not only a cheaper option but also a player with his best years ahead of him.

Although Amorim will have to wait before he can offer any insight into potential United transfers given the 39-year-old won’t take up his post until next month.

As part of the £8.3 million deal to bring Amorim to Old Trafford, the tactician was required to comply with a notice period in his contract, which extends him until the November international break.

It means one of Amorim’s last games in charge of reigning champions Portugal will be against rivals United. Manchester Cityand next week they will meet face to face.

Amorim’s first game as United manager will be away to Ipswich Town, followed by a doubleheader at Old Trafford against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League and then Everton in the Europa League. Premier League.
