Three more Reds will become free agents; One Fan Favorite Signs New Course

It was a busy day for the Cincinnati Reds.

The Reds announced multiple roster changes earlier on Friday. The moves included the transfer of four players – Nick Martini, Austin Wynns, Tejay Anton and Ty France – to Triple-A Louisville. France and Martini would prefer free agency over their assignment to Triple-A.

The Reds later announced more moves – some that excited Reds fans and others that hurt their hearts.

Starting with the player they keep The Reds announced they have re-signed left-handed pitcher Brent Suter. on a one-year contract that includes a club option for 2026. The deal will pay Suter $2.25 million in 2025 and a club option in 2026 worth $3 million.

Suter, a graduate of Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, is a beloved member of the Reds and the Cincinnati community. He made 47 appearances in 2024 where he had a 3.15 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.

But several other players could be leaving the Queen City.

Pitcher Nick Martinez, for example, declined his player option, and pitcher Jacob Younis declined his mutual option.

Martinez, 34, had a 3.10 ERA in 142.1 innings with the Reds. He bounced between the starting rotation and bullpen before injuries forced him into a starting role throughout the season. By the end of the year, Martinez had excelled and quickly became a fan (and club) favourite.

Younis was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline that sent Frankie Montas to Milwaukee. The right-hander made 14 appearances with the Reds, posting a 2.85 ERA in 41 innings.

Cincinnati also announced that the team declined the team’s option on veteran catcher Luke Maile, making him a free agent as well. Despite his popularity, Maile’s play on the field was not up to par for a team with postseason aspirations.
