“Maid in Manhattan” (November 1)

Jennifer Lopez plays a single mother who works at a luxury hotel in Manhattan. There, she attracts the attention of a politician (Ralph Fiennes), and what ensues is a modern-day Cinderella story in which Lopez goes from rags to riches.

“Sixteen Candles” (November 1)

This John Hughes classic took the high school coming-of-age genre to never-before-seen heights with Hughes’ use of comedy, likable actors (especially Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall) and insight into the complexities of adolescence. A day in the life of Sam (Ringwald) when she turns 16.

“Superbad” (November 1)

Need more modern school history? In this comedy, Jonah Hill and Michael Cera play two high school students who plan to go out in a blaze of glory, partying and losing their virginity while kissing the school goodbye.

Brendan Fraser won an Oscar for his portrayal of Charlie, a morbidly obese English teacher desperate to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (Sadie Silk).

“Whip” (November 1)

The lifeblood of Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed drama lies in the performances of Miles Teller as an ambitious student jazz drummer and JK Simmons as his tyrannical mentor.

The evolution of both characters highlights Chazelle’s talent as a storyteller, as well as the skills of Teller, whose performances are still among the best of his career, and Simmons, who won an Oscar for his work.
