Dagenham bagpipe band split up due to recruitment problems

A women’s bagpipe band that has been performing for almost 100 years says it is breaking up because it is struggling to recruit younger members.

The girls are no longer keen on picking up the bagpipes – their last performance will be on Remembrance Sunday, according to Dagenham Girl Pipers.

Denise Morrison, who joined the east London group when she was nine, said the girls were “more into social media these days than the discipline of the group”.

They shared their stories with BBC London during a final rehearsal at Wales House Museum in Barking.
