The idea that women might vote differently than their husbands made Fox News star Jesse Watters’ brain melt on air this week.

Speaking about his current wife, Watters, with his signature smirk: told my colleagues about Five“If I found out that Emma walked into the voting booth and pulled the lever for Harris, that would be the same as having an affair.” This is from a man who confessed to his employer in 2017 that he had a relationship with a colleague who was 14 years his junior, which reportedly led to his divorce from his first wife. “What else is she hiding from me?” Jesse wondered, causing his fellow panelists to laugh.

Apart from hypocrisy, Mother Jones Creator Kat Abugazale argues that Watters’ reaction reveals a fierce undercurrent of sexist resentment running through this year’s election campaign, typified by Donald Trump, who just this week ominously vowed to protect women. “Whether women like it or not.”

It’s an issue that Democrats and their anti-Trump allies have been keen to highlight, including former congresswoman and leading Harris campaigner Liz Cheney, who told CBS’ Facing the nation on Wednesday“Frankly, I think you’re going to have a lot of men and women who will go into the voting booth and vote their conscience, vote for Vice President Harris.”

“They may never say anything publicly,” she added, “but the results will speak for themselves.”

Michelle Obama has also seized on this dynamic. “Just remember that your vote is a personal matter.” she spoke at a rally in Michigan over the weekend.

This private decision could soon have very public consequences—for the entire country.
