THRC demands report on woman exposed naked and two other cases – Telangana Today

The three cases involve brutal torture, public display of a woman naked, alleged bullying at a medical college in Tripura and forcing a woman into marriage, officials said on Saturday. A THRC spokesperson said the commission, headed by former Tripura High Court judge Swapan Chandra Das, has ordered authorities to investigate each incident and submit detailed reports within two to three weeks.

Agartala: The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken cognizance of three recent cases of atrocities against women in the state.

These three cases include brutal torture, exposure of a naked woman; of alleged bullying at the Tripura Medical College and forcing a woman to marry a youth, officials said here on Saturday.

A THRC spokesperson said the commission, headed by former Tripura High Court judge Swapan Chandra Das, has directed the authorities concerned to conduct an inquiry into all three incidents and submit detailed reports on each case within two to three weeks.

In a shocking incident, a married woman was brutally beaten, stripped of her clothes and paraded naked earlier this week in Bagber area under Kalamchaura police station in Sepahijala district.

Referring to the incident, THRC in its order said that the reported fact cannot but shock every person in a civilized society.

Citing a Supreme Court case, the commission said the apex court had made detailed observations on women’s rights, which seem to be frequently violated. Tripura, where the rule of law is strictly enforced.

THRC has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report within three weeks.

Police have so far arrested three people in connection with the incident, while three more accused are on the run.

Citing media reports about the rags, the THRC ordered the principal of Tripura Medical College, a semi-government institution, to submit a detailed report on the alleged rags incident within three weeks.

The commission has also directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of West Tripura district to conduct an independent investigation and submit the findings within three weeks.

“Tag is not only a criminal offense, but also a violation of the human rights of students. It calls for immediate action under the Tripura Educational Institutions (Prevention of Swearing) Act, 1990,” the commission said.

The THRC order cited previous interventions in a similar incident that took place in 2022 at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Gomati district, which resulted in targeted recommendations to curb brutal violence.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also heads the home, health and family welfare departments, while talking to the media, condemned the riots at the Tripura Medical College and asked the authorities to take appropriate measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

In its October 30 ruling, the HRC also took note of reports of unlawful interference in the private lives of two adults by local leaders who, going beyond the bounds of the law, forced an adult girl to marry a boy.

Despite the police being aware of the situation, the HR Committee noted that “police action was reported to have been cancelled,” indicating a lack of proper response.

The commission felt it necessary to seek a report on the incident from the DGP with a deadline of two weeks for submission.
