COLONIE — A New York State trooper was struck and injured during a traffic stop in Colonie on Saturday, Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

Hochul reported on X (formerly Twitter) at 2:38 p.m. Her message did not provide details, including the soldier’s condition.

“Earlier this afternoon, a New York State Trooper was struck by a moving vehicle during a routine traffic stop in Colonie,” Hochul wrote. “Every day @nyspolice goes above and beyond to keep us safe. Our prayers are with the soldier and his family during this difficult time.”

Earlier at 1:35 p.m., State Police said the right lane of southbound Interstate 87 Northway and the on-ramp to Exit 6-7 in Colonie, New York, were closed due to the crash and asked people to avoid the area.

511ny.org showed the two right lanes on that section of Northway still closed at 3:15 p.m. Saturday. It states the start time of the incident at 12:30.

Traffic cameras also recorded heavy traffic jams heading south on the Northway past the Twin Bridges.
