It’s never too late! John Steenhuisen returns to study after 30 years

Agriculture Minister and Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen reveals his plans go back to school after dropping out due to financial reasons.

The politician was previously ridiculed for having only a senior certificate (Matric).

Steenhuisen is one of the few GNU ministers without an academic background. Others include Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean McPherson and Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie.

JOHN STEENHUISEN IS STUDYING AGAIN

In a video posted on social media, UNISA said John Steenhuisen has registered to continue his academic education through distance learning in 2025.

The Minister would like to pursue areas of interest including management, public policy, public administration and change management, which he plans to focus on for further development.

He said: “Now that I am in a key position in government, I would like to acquire certain skills that would help me do my job better.

“And Unisa gives me the opportunity to work and study. Therefore, I intend to continue my qualifications.”

COLLEGE VACATION TO THE OFFICE

Before he was sworn in as Agriculture Minister, John Steenhuisen’s academic qualifications and political experience were hot topics among fellow politicians.

After leaving school in 1993, his first known position was as a ward councilor in 1999, at the age of 22. He then rose through the ranks to become DA leader in 2019.

Unlike other leaders and ministers of political parties, John Steenhuisen does not have a university education. He initially registered for a bachelor’s degree in politics, but Steenhuisen was forced to leave in his first year due to financial constraints and work pressures.

Although he may not have a degree, John Steenhuisen has excelled during his brief apprenticeship.

In a tweet posted at the end of 2018, John shared several certificates of merit for achieving excellence in various policy modules. “I did pretty well,” he tweeted.
