‘I’m done!’: Conservative columnist leaves Washington Post after live broadcast fails

Hugh Hewitt, a conservative columnist for The Washington Post, said he left the paper Friday after an on-air feud with journalist Jonathan Capehart over Donald Trumprhetoric against the backdrop of the presidential elections.

“I’m not going back, Jonathan. I’m sick of it!” Hewitt said on Washington Post Live’s “First Look”taking off the earphone and rushing away.

“This is the most unfair election ad I’ve ever been involved in,” he told Capehart and another Post writer, Ruth Marcus. “Guys, you are working. This is fine. I’m done.”

Hewitt’s reaction came after Capehart suggested Trump was “laying the groundwork to challenge” this year’s vote, following recent statement by the Republican presidential candidate that there was a “fraud” in Pennsylvania.

Hewitt, who said that he voted for Trump last month, Marcus interrupted, as she predicted the former president would “force his supporters to vote” and also go to court to make “every argument possible, no matter how far-fetched.”

“We are journalists, although we have opinions, and we have to report the whole story if we raise part of it,” Hewitt said.

“Yes, he’s upset about Bucks County (Pa.), but he was right and he won the case,” Hewitt said of Trump. “That’s the story.”

Hewitt was referring to a Pennsylvania judge who agreed Wednesday extend the early voting period in Bucks County. Trump campaign sues reports of long lines and voter refusal while they waited to apply in person for voting by mail.

Capehart said he “didn’t like being lectured about reporting” when Hewitt shared “a lot of things that aren’t basic facts” on the Post show.

This response led to Hewitt’s downfall, and the program subsequently encountered technical difficulties before Capehart shut it down.

“Everyone, if you’ve watched First Look, you know these conversations can be interesting and controversial,” Capehart said.

“You just saw Hugh Hewitt leave the conversation, which is unfortunate, unfortunate. It is what it is.”

Hewitt, who has written columns for the Post since 2017, told the paper’s editorial page editor he was leaving on Friday. as reported by Fox News Digital.

“I actually left the Post, but I only wrote a column for them every six weeks or so,” Hewitt told the publication.
