Anthony Albanese pledges to provide 100,000 free TAFE places every year.

The Labor Party has pledged to provide 100,000 free TAFE places each year if the Federal Government wins re-election.

Since coming to power in 2022, the Federal Government has provided 180,000 free TAFE places, with a further 300,000 to be offered over three years from 2024.

At a rally among party loyalists in Adelaide, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese listed his government’s achievements and detailed the party’s first major election commitments.

He said the Government’s free TAFE program had exceeded expectations and enabled 508,000 people to enroll in courses in priority areas including disability, aged care, early childhood education and construction.

“I’m proud to announce that our government will block free TAFE and make it permanent across the country,” Mr Albanese told the crowd.

The launch of the pseudo-campaign follows announcements on Saturday and this morning that the federal government will cut university HECS debt by 20 per cent and raise the income threshold at which loan repayments will begin if it wins the next election.

The announcement was Labour’s first major election commitment and Education Secretary Jason Clare told Sky News it would be the first bill a re-elected Labor government would introduce to Parliament.

Mr Albanese has made his case to Labor for a second term in government.

“No one was left behind and no one was left behind. This principle has guided me all my life. I never lost sight of it and I never forgot the people we are here to serve,” Mr. Albanese said.

“That’s why my colleagues and I work every day to make a difference in people’s lives, and why we are so determined to win next year’s election.”

Labour’s attempt to reset the political debate follows a week of scrutiny over claims Mr Albanese sought a flight upgrade from former Qantas boss Alan Joyce while on the travel portfolio.

Mr Albanese categorically denies ever approaching anyone at Qantas to request a free upgrade.
