A World War II B-29 Superfortress stops in Springfield for hands-on history lessons.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A World War II B-29 Superfortress is visiting the Ozarks all weekend.

The plane, called “Doc,” is one of 1,644 B-29s built by Boeing during World War II. It is now one of the last two aircraft flying. It took crews 16 years to fully restore Doc and fly again.

“That’s why we’re releasing the plane, we want people to get a glimpse into a piece of our country’s history, to learn about the technology of the 1940s that was part of that generation of aviation,” said Joss Wells, the plane’s chief executive.

Weather permitting, flight tours will continue Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., with ground and cockpit tours running from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

“It’s important that we continue to make sure that these warbirds fly, they continue to tell the story of previous generations and the Greatest Generation, and we do that through hands-on training and aviation,” Wells said.
