Firefighters from eight Tompkins County departments rushed to put out a series of wildfires along East Shore Drive Friday night, resulting in road closures on both East Shore Drive and Highway 13 near Ithaca. The fires quickly spread, prompting the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response to call in all available crews to assist the Lansing and Ithaca fire departments.

Initial reports indicate sparks from a vehicle traveling on East Shore Drive likely ignited dry leaves and brush, creating multiple fires along the roadside. As the fire intensified, departments from neighboring counties, including Genoa and Cortland, were also sent to help. By evening, authorities closed Cayuga Heights Road and warned residents using the Bolton Point water system about low water pressure.

By midnight, county officials reported the fires, burning approximately eight to 10 acres, were largely under control. Fortunately, no houses were in danger and no evacuation orders were issued. One firefighter was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and two others were treated at the scene.
