Saoirse Ronan wants Greta Gerwig to write her a musical

Steve McQueen’s upcoming World War II drama “Blitz” It is many things – a harrowing documentation of the German bombing of London, a child’s view of war, an eclectic portrait of a diverse community living at war. terrible tension – and while it may not be a full-fledged musical, the music plays an integral part of its storytelling, and the main star Saoirse Ronan showing off his amazing voice more than once throughout movie. Talking to Playlist in a recent interview, Ronan expressed her love for music and hoped that soon, with the right collaborator, she’d be able to stretch her pipes again.

“I’m not a singer, but I would love to be in a musical,” Ronan said. “I would like to star in a musical. I think it would be a lot of fun. And I decided that Greta (Gerwig) would write it.

When asked if Gerwig knew she was taking on this responsibility, Ronan added: “She’ll find out in time. This is good. I’ll tell her when I’m ready.

Earlier in the interview, Ronan spoke about her singing in previous roles, such as “French Control Room” and her first film, Amy Heckerling’s I Could Never Be Your Woman, but performed in front of large audiences, as she did in “BlitzIt was a completely different experience.

“I did a little bit of work here and there,” Ronan said. “And listen, I’m not a professional singer, but I love singing and I get really nervous doing it in front of anyone. So performing in front of people was a big deal.”

As a backup, Ronan recorded the songs she performed in “Blitz” at Abbey Road Studios, and then she and McQueen decided “on the day” whether they would use them or she would sing live.

“I sang, but we mixed it with stuff we made in the studio, which was raw,” Ronan told The Playlist. “They didn’t do anything about it or anything. But yes, apparently this is exactly what you need to do. For safety reasons, you will have to write this down in advance.”

Reflecting on how McQueen conveyed what music meant to Ronan’s character and her family and how it was the “beating heart” of their home, the actress immediately connected with that sentiment.

“I grew up with music just being played all the time, and that’s the art form that I’m most drawn to, even more than film and television – it’s music,” Ronan said. “I’ve always loved it more than anything. So yeah, it was just really fun to bring to life.”

“Blitz” now streams in select theaters and on Apple TV+ on November 22.
