Jeffress wins endorsement from Trump in Arizona – Baptist News Global

Southern Baptist Pastor Robert Jeffress received shout out from Donald Trump last week at a rally in Phoenix.

Trump gave an interview to Tucker Carlson, who was fired from Fox News for lying but remains an ardent Trump supporter. Also attending the rally at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale was Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom Trump has said he will put in charge of health care and women’s health in his next administration. Kennedy is a vaccine denier who wants to get rid of most vaccines and force cities to stop adding fluoride to public water.

During a lengthy conversation with Trump, Carlson asked, “How have your views about God changed over the last eight years, especially since you were shot?”

Trump responded: “Well, lookI’ve always been a believer, but I wouldn’t say that you know – there’s a certain pastor, Robert Jeffress. I didn’t know him – his name is Robert Jeffress – a nice guy from Texas, and he said, “You know, Trump may not be the best Christian there is, but he’s the one who’s going to take us to the promised land because he’s the best leader, and “He’s the coolest guy and he can get us through this crazy life.”

“And he was a big supporter and now I have incredible evangelical and Christian support because I – I mean I’ve done a great job for them and we, you know, we’re together – but he said maybe , doesn’t know the Bible is as good as other people, but you know, he did something too – a long time ago they chose Ronald Reagan over Jimmy Carter, you know, in a way, they said he wasn’t like that he’s religious, but he’s the guy who will get the job done. And I’ve really done a lot of work on a lot of issues related to saving religion, because these people want to put religion out of business.”

Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas, has indeed been one of the biggest Trump supporters among evangelical pastors.

Jeffress tweeted Trump clip praised him and added: “Thank you @realDonaldTrump! I look forward to four more years of your leadership!”

Also last week, a clip of Jeffress being interviewed for a new film about Trump began appearing on social media. Movie, Trump 2024: the world after Trumpincludes several segments featuring not only Jeffress, but also Jack Graham, pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas; Tony Perkins, leader of the Family Research Council; Franklin Graham, head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse; Mike Huckabee, former Southern Baptist pastor and former governor of Arkansas; and other religious leaders.

In one of the videos, Jeffress is asked about women’s support for Trump, who was convicted of sexual assault to bribe a porn star with whom he had an affair. Jeffress responds:

I have seen a real difference in how Christian women view President Trump, and older Christian women seem to have a more balanced view of the President. They can look past these things and say we appreciate what this president is trying to do for our country.

Elsewhere in the film Graham says:

We know that when we elect the President of the United States, the President is a secular leader. We do not elect a pastor to lead the country. We do not choose a bishop or a Sunday school teacher. that’s not why we elect someone to be president. If you go to a doctor, you want the best doctor, you don’t have to check to see if he’s, you know, a Christian doctor.

And Jeffress at one point admits that Trump is an “imperfect vessel”:

President Trump would be the first to say that he is a flawed vessel. I believe God has used him in a very powerful way to help bring our country back to some basic biblical principles that have brought God’s blessings to our country.

However, Jeffress also states, “Every time we walk into a voting booth, we are casting a vote for righteousness or unrighteousness.”
