Paul Mescal and Fred Hechinger on gladiators bumping into their Roman headphones

We know a fair amount about what gladiators did in Ancient Rome. What they wore, what they ate, how they fought and who they served. But if they existed in 2024, what would they and their emperors be listening to? Drive Abby and Tyrone put it on Paul Mescal And Fred Hechinger to find out.

Fred, who plays Emperor Caracella, thinks he would play aggressively edgy music like Deadly Grips or 100 Gek.

“It just exploded so loud,” he said.

“For example, I feel like the soundtrack is really intense and all over the place.”

Meanwhile Paul, who plays Lucius, believes his gladiator character will think he is completely outside of music.

“I feel like Lucius just went white,” he said.

“He’s like… not a musical paragon, but he’s the kind of guy who’s going to be on a long-haul flight. He’ll just be a guy looking at distance and height.

“I just locked myself out. Yes, I’m rude.”
