What prisoners want voters to remember

What prisoners want voters to remember

Most people in prison cannot vote. That’s what they want you to think about when you vote.

When the Board of Elections begins counting votes tomorrow evening, there won’t be many inmate ballots among the total. But while most prisoners are not allowed to vote, our survey results published last week show that they still want candidates to hear their concerns.

The Appeal partnered with two incarcerated journalists, Quaneta Harris and Christopher Blackwell, to examine a small sample of the major election issues of their fellow inmates at the Lane Murray Unit in Texas and the Washington Correctional Center in Washington. Our down payment focuses on what incarcerated citizens want candidates to know. Today we are releasing the remaining survey responses that answer the question: “What do you hope voters outside of prison remember or care about when they vote?”

Their responses reflect the diverse and varied perspectives of the prisoners who took our survey. Politics can be just as polarizing a topic inside prison as outside it. “We are not a monolith. We are not some kind of voting bloc on one issue,” Harris said.

However, all respondents had suggestions for voters that they might consider on Election Day. Without being able to vote themselves, they still want to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

“Like people in society, prisoners have a desire to participate in our elections. We have thoughts and views that are debated within us as we envision a society where our communities are safe, taxes are fair, resources are provided, and the justice system heals rather than causes further harm,” Blackwell said.
