Community-based disaster risk management training aims to empower communities to manage disaster risks so that no one is left behind during a disaster.

Rural and Maritime Development Minister Sakiasi Ditoka says training cycles are conducted throughout the year across all divisions to help educate and sensitize communities on disaster risk management.

Ditoka says the ministry will continue to move forward strongly, especially as cyclone season approaches.

“This is why community-based disaster risk management training is being provided to communities. Therefore, every village has a disaster risk management committee. Every time I go into communities, into rural areas, I ask them, where is your disaster risk management committee? So I continue to challenge them.”

The Minister stresses that the Ministry will continue to combat complacency among the people as it creates and sends the wrong message in terms of disaster preparedness.

Ditoka urges all Fijians to prepare themselves and their families for natural disasters, especially during the onset of cyclone season.
