Rohit Sharma to retire from Tests if he doesn’t do well in Australia: Chris Srikkanth

Rohit Sharma to retire from Tests if he doesn’t do well in Australia: Chris Srikkanth

Former India captain Chris Srikkanth has said that he believes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will find their mojo with the bat during India’s tour of Australia. The plucky former opener said Rohit will retire from Test cricket if he is not good with the bat Down Under. However, according to Srikkanth, it is too early to talk about leaving Kohli in the traditional format.

Questions have been asked about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s places in the Test squad after India were whitewashed 0-3 by New Zealand on Sunday. Both senior professionals failed consecutively in the three tests, struggling with speed and spin. Virat Kohli made just 93 runs and Rohit made just 91 runs.

Captain Rohit spoke to the press and admitted that he was far from his best as a batsman and captain in the Test series. This was the first time India lost Test series with more than two matches without winning a single one.

“100 per cent, you need to start thinking ahead (if India doesn’t do well in Australia). If Rohit Sharma doesn’t do well, I think he will retire from Test cricket himself, as far as you know. He will play in ODIs. Only he has already retired from T20I cricket. We have to keep in mind that he is also getting old,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube show.

Srikkanth said Rohit admits his mistakes this is the first sign of his path to redemption.

“At least Rohit Sharma had courage. Hats off to Rohit Sharma for accepting the fact that he has played poorly throughout the series and has been a poor captain. This is cool. This is the player’s first step back into rhythm. your guilt is very important. This is a very important quality of a person. “He accepted it openly and that means he is on the road to recovery, that’s my opinion,” he said.

India struggled with pace in the first Test in Bangalore and lost due to spin in the second and third Tests in Pune and Mumbai. Only twice in six innings did India cross the 200-run mark as New Zealand continued to put pressure on India right from the opening day of the series in Bangalore.

“IT’S EARLY TO TALK ABOUT KOHLI”

Srikkanth, however, backed Virat Kohli to find his best form in Australia, highlighting his past success Down Under. Kohli averages 54 in Australia with 1352 runs from 13 matches, including six hundreds and four fifties.

“In my opinion, Virat Kohli will start playing in Australia (comeback). His region is Australia. I think that’s his strength. I think it’s too early to talk like that about Virat Kohli (leaving him). I won’t accept it, Virat Kohli has a lot of time to devote to Test cricket,” he added.

IS THE ERA OF THE BIG FOUR OVER?

Meanwhile, India’s former chief selector said that the big four of the Indian Test team – Rohit, Kohli, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – may have already played their last home Test together.

Ashwin and Jadeja failed to live up to expectations and had to struggle until the final Test in Mumbai. Washington Sundar, who was not part of the team for the first Test, outshone the senior professionals with his performances in the series.

“But I saw a headline in one of the newspapers. Is this the last time these four big boys play together – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja? It was a bold headline. I think they played their part. Last test together at home. I think this is my opinion, this may be the last time,” Srikkanth said.

India did not panic and made changes to the large squad they selected for the five-Test series starting on November 22 in Australia. However, reports say that the BCCI will consider the future of senior players after the Border-Gavaskar Cup.
