List of participants for the NASCAR Cup Series championship race

When NASCAR Cup Series fans debate which driver has had the most successful campaign, most will focus on the Championship 4 lineup: Ryan Blaney, William Byron, Joey Logano and Tyler Reddick.

Others will argue that Kyle Larson, despite crashing out of Sunday’s Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway, had his best campaign. Larson scored six wins, double the total of his five closest peers, collected the most stage wins (12) and led laps (1,687). The 2021 tournament title winner also has 14 top-five finishes in the series.

Larson appeared poised to advance to the Round of 16, but was passed by Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott, who was running on fresher tires, with 23 laps remaining. He was not a factor the rest of the way as eventual winner Ryan Blaney also passed the No. 5 Chevrolet.

Larson earned third place on Sunday but couldn’t overcome a setback in the first two Round of 16 events.

“We had a lot of bonus points,” Larson told Frontstretch.com. “We had 20 more than the next guy to start this round and we had just had two bad races. In Vegas, all the problems we had right there in the Manor with the apartment (and) the damage under the car turned the situation into a fight. You just can’t have two bad races in the eighth round.”

Larson made headlines for attempting to compete in the Doubles, IndyCar and NASCAR races on the same Memorial Day weekend Sunday, but like his playoff quest, his efforts were unsuccessful.

“I don’t want to say there’s anything wrong with the format, but you can’t have two bad races in the round of 16,” Larson told reporters after last Sunday’s elimination.

Larson may be eyeing a Desert Cup title, but he may have had the best season of any circuit driver.
