Shots fired at TopGolf as police continue searching for suspect

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama ((VBRK) – Birmingham Police are investigating an incident that occurred at Topgolf in Birmingham on Sunday evening.

Investigators say the business was temporarily placed on lockdown after someone fired shots in the area.

A Topgolf spokesperson said this is an active investigation and it is working closely with BPD. WBRC spoke with Birmingham City Councilor Hunter Williams, who said gun violence is a problem in our communities, but officers are working hard to make sure these places are safe.

“Well, I often visit this area or go there; is my safety at risk when I do this?” Williams asks.

Williams serves on the city’s Public Safety Council and says these are questions that come up among neighbors as gun violence continues to be a problem in our community, especially in our entertainment districts.

“These incidents, for the most part, are targeted, isolated incidents where we have people who have come to a particular location that is causing a dispute related to illegal activity, or they are going somewhere to commit an illegal activity, such as buying drugs. ” Williams explains.

Birmingham police are working to identify the suspect. According to them, the suspect shot at a group of men. The captured car was hit, but no one was injured. All this happened around 17:40.

There is no one in custody.

Williams says neighbors shouldn’t be afraid to go outside.

“Have situational awareness of where you are and where you park. Is it well lit? Are you in an area where you feel safe commuting to and from? And also do not expose yourself to unnecessary risks. If you’re going to do something illegal, you’re obviously putting yourself at unnecessary risk,” Williams says.

Top Golf released the following statement, which reads in part:

“Rest assured, the safety of our players and playmakers has been and continues to be of paramount importance at all of our stadiums around the world.”
