Deseret News Plan for Election Night Coverage – Deseret News

Deseret News Plan for Election Night Coverage – Deseret News

The polls will close Tuesday after Americans decide who they want represented in local, state and federal offices. The Deseret News will keep readers up to date on what’s happening in the tight presidential race, control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and the Utah elections.

Polls close at 8:00 pm in Utah.

This year, Deseret News coverage will include on-the-ground reporting, real-time blogging and interactive maps showing updated results as The Associated Press calls races across the country. Deseret News Executive Editor Doug Wilkes and Editor Sarah Weaver, along with other senior editors, will make the decision when the Deseret News publishes stories about elections being called in those races.

The homepage is where you’ll find important stories about national and statewide election results, but there are other interactive pages you can visit to dive deeper.

National election coverage

On Election Night, the Deseret News home page will have a bar at the top of the page showing how many Electoral College votes former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have blocked as states are called for either candidate.

Our presidential elections reporter Samuel Benson will be at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where the Harris campaign is holding an election night party. Deseret News reporter Dennis Romboy will be in Florida, where the Trump campaign is holding a party at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.

Benson and Romboy will report from the field on the mood of each campaign group throughout the night.

On the national election results page, you will see three maps: one map for the US Presidential election and a map each for the US Senate and House of Representatives.

The US presidential election map will be updated as states are called. If you hover over a state, you can see information such as the number of votes counted and the overall percentage. A bar showing the Electoral College votes will also be visible above this map.

The maps of the US Senate and House of Representatives will be similar – they will show which direction the results in the states are moving. Above each of these maps there will also be a bar showing the results of the Senate and House races in real time.

Reporters at the Deseret News office will be live blogging about the presidential election as well as covering events in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Once the polls close on the East Coast, you’ll be able to see the latest on the national election – with a focus on the swing states that could very well decide who becomes the next president.

The national election results page will also be a place where you can find other stories written by Deseret News reporters heading into the night.

Utah election coverage

If you’re looking for the latest news on Utah election results, the Deseret News will also have a page dedicated to those results.

This page will show results for the gubernatorial and Senate races, as well as a tracker showing races for the State Senate and State House of Representatives. A drop-down list will appear allowing you to select your area and view the results.

The Deseret News will have separate coverage of many of the races you’ll see on this special page and on the home page. Reporters Brigham Tomko, Hannah Cyriac and Lisa Riley Roche will attend campaign parties for federal and state candidates. There will also be coverage of the state school board elections, as well as reactions to the presidential election results from the Utah Republican Party and Utah Democratic Party supervisory parties.

Photojournalists will be capturing key moments from Election Day in Utah.

What does it mean to call elections?

The Associated Press has a whole team of people who analyze election results to determine which candidate will win the election. This is what is meant by the phrase “call an election.”

If the trailing candidate has no path to victory, then Associated Press announces the race.

This means readers will likely know the results of several races on election night. But other elections, including possibly the presidential election, may take longer to be called.
