What can influence victory?

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump took their final steps towards victory. Now, as Americans from coast to coast voted Tuesday, polls show elections are likely to be held in seven leading states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Nevada and Arizona.

What could tip the scales? From the gender gap to the black and Latino vote and the “blue wall” here are six factors that can determine the winner.

  • The winner will likely not be known tonight.. Late-count mail ballots, especially in the swing states of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, each of which prohibit election officials from starting opening and counting absentee ballots before 7 a.m. on Election Day, when they also have to handle in-person voting.
  • Big congressional races are also at stake. All 435 House seats are up for election this year, and a few close calls could decide which party wins the majority. At the same time, 34 seats are being contested in the Senate.
  • We are monitoring any possible unrest on Election Day. Election officials are closely monitoring hardware failures and software problems that have disrupted the counting of votes in some local elections in previous elections, as well as threats of violence that have infected the democratic process.

We have you: Harris will watch the results from Howard University in Washington, while Trump watches from West Palm Beach, Florida. Read USA TODAY’s Election Day news live..

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to consider whether a convicted murderer’s mental retardation is so severe that he cannot be executed, ordering the lower court to clarify its view first.
