Chicago police shooting: Officer Enrique Martinez among two killed in East Chatham near East 80th Street and South Ingleside Avenue

CHICAGO (WLS) — A young Chicago police officer was killed in the line of duty Monday night in the East Chatham neighborhood and two people remain in custody.

Police said the 26-year-old officer had only been on the force for three years and died after a gunman shot him multiple times. The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified the officer as Enrique Martinez.

A somber procession was held in honor of the 6th District officer early Tuesday morning. Lines of police cars escort his body to the medical examiner’s office.

The shooting happened in the East Chatham neighborhood near East 80th Street and South Ingleside Avenue around 8 p.m.

CPD soup. Larry Snelling said officers stopped a car with three people inside and approached it. That’s when someone inside fired shots, hitting the 26-year-old officer multiple times. Another person in the car was also fatally wounded.

Snelling said the officer discharged his weapon at some point on the scene. Detectives are still examining firearms belonging to the officers involved in Monday night’s incident, he added.

A Chicago police officer was among two people shot and killed on the city’s South Side Monday night, CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said, said.

The shooting suspect tried to flee the scene on foot but was later apprehended, Snelling said. A third person, who was in the back seat of the car, was detained at the scene.

“What we know at this time is that there was one officer on scene who fired his weapon. That officer’s weapon is still being examined,” Superintendent Larry Snelling said. “There is evidence of recovery. And that’s all the information we have at the moment.”

Authorities said the suspected shooter tried to escape. He drove away from the scene and hit one of the other officers in the process. The suspect then ran away but was caught several blocks away.

Superintendent Snelling said one of the suspects was under electronic monitoring but may have disabled his ankle monitor. The news prompted Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara to call for greater accountability in the fight against crime.

“Does my face look surprised? said Catanzara. – Unfortunately, this is not so. In this county, in this city, it’s just the status quo. Again, they are allowed to do whatever they want and you continue to make excuses.

The third person in the car was detained. The other injured officer is expected to be OK.

Police said the officer at the scene did fire his weapon. The scene of the incident is still being analyzed.

Law enforcement officers recovered two pistols from the scene.

One of the guns was in the possession of a man who suffered fatal gunshot wounds inside the vehicle. The second pistol is a semi-automatic weapon with an extended magazine.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating.

Snelling said CPD is not releasing the officer’s name at this time to allow his family to grieve.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also spoke at a news conference Monday night, and he and Snelling asked Chicagoans to keep the officer’s family in their thoughts.
