After rising to the top of the NFC East, the Washington Commanders made a big move ahead of the NFL trade deadline by acquiring four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints.

By NFL Network Ian Rapoport, The Saints will receive a third-round 2025 draft pick plus additional compensation from Washington in exchange for Lattimore.

ESPN Adam Schefter The added New Orleans will also add a 2025 fourth-round pick and will receive its own sixth-round pick, which was traded to Washington during the preseason for John Ridgway. As part of the deal, the Commanders will also receive a fifth-round pick.

The Chiefs are battling the Philadelphia Eagles, who have AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith at wide receiver, for first place in the division. Adding Lattimore to their defense will help slow down the passing game for opposing teams.

Always struggling to balance their salary cap, the Saints have had $4.2 million in cap space this season before Lattimore was traded. The Commanders had the sixth-most caps collected in the league. $25.1 million.

It didn’t take long for Jayden Daniels to completely change the tone around the Commanders organization.

ESPN Adam Schefter On Saturday, it was reported that players around the league had said either privately or to their agents that they wanted to be traded to Washington.

While it’s unclear whether Lattimore falls into this category, it’s a great fit for both parties. The 28-year-old is no longer the same type of player he was when he was a hawk earlier in his career, but he is still very effective when playing on the outside.

Lattimore misses just one reception every 30.1 snaps and has allowed 83 total yards as the starting back this season.

Kobe Durant passed for more yards yesterday (93) than Marshon Lattimore has all season (83).
Otherwise, however, Durant was quite competitive for the most part.

First-year head coach Dan Quinn protects the Commanders. ranked fifth in passing yards allowed per game (183.3), but their 14 passing touchdowns allowed connected and became ninth in the league in scoring.

It’s a sharp turnaround for a franchise that spent last year’s trade deadline making trades for Chase Young and Montez Sweat. Lattimore’s talent will be tested right away as the Commanders’ next two games are against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Eagles.

The Saints may be starting a long-overdue rebound after a 23-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Lattimore’s trading takes place one day after they dismissed head coach Dennis Allen.

Allen’s firing comes amid a seven-game losing streak after starting the season 2-0. The Saints will still be in purgatory even without Lattimore on their roster.

Anyone who says “pick now a player you don’t want” is grossly underestimating how bad the 2025 cap situation is for the Saints right now. They legitimately want players to decide to retire. https://t.co/1SXK6Cx6ty

Lattimore will still matter. $20.6 million against the Saints’ cap in 2025, but trading him would save the club $16 million in cash costs next year.

On the bright side, however, this trade does give the Saints six picks in the first four rounds of the 2025 draft. They desperately need to bolster their roster with young, talented players at a limited cost to get them out of their current cap situation and out of the purgatory they’ve been in since 2021.
