Oilers host Indigenous celebration against Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place

The Edmonton Oilers will honor and celebrate Indigenous culture when they take on the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday at Rogers Place.

“This game gives our fans the opportunity to learn about Indigenous history, culture and traditions while paying tribute to an important Indigenous community and fan base right here in Oil Country,” said Tim Shipton of OEG Sports & Entertainment in a press release. on Tuesday.

The game will honor several First Nations elders from across northern Alberta. Drummers and dancers will take part in the pre-match celebrations. Three other Indigenous sporting leaders will also be honored at the game.

On the ice, Oilers fans will be able to hear Canada’s national anthem in Cree and enjoy a performance by a Métis fiddler.

Enoch Cree Minor hockey players will be able to live out their NHL dreams by taking part in a skills challenge during the first intermission.

“We value our long-standing relationship with Indigenous communities and are committed to deepening our understanding so we can continue to honor and set an example for inclusivity in the National Hockey League and our community,” Shipton said.

The Oilers 50/50 raffle will support Spirit North, an organization that helps Indigenous youth access sports and recreation programs.
