It’s happening! 3 Things I Want to See (And 2 Things I Don’t) in the Next Godzilla Movie from Director Takashi Yamazaki

You saw the title. It’s happening! This is really happening. In fact we’re getting another one Godzilla a film by Takashi Yamazaki, director of one of the greatest (and my favorite) Godzilla Movies of All Time, Godzilla minus one.

This news was published in tweet “emergency message” from Touhou and me (and my son, a new Godzilla fan) To be honest, I’m very happy. We currently don’t know if this new film will be a direct sequel Godzilla minus one or something completely different, but at the moment my head is just teeming with ideas.

So, given the limited knowledge we have about Takashi Yamazaki’s writing, directing, and visual effects, here are three things I definitely want to see (and two things I definitely want to see). Not I want to see) from the next part in the current era of Godzilla.

I want to see: continuation of the story and characters of “Godzilla Minus One”

Okay, I’ll admit right off the bat that the first thing I want to see is a direct sequel Godzilla minus one. Yes I do Shin Godzilla and I adore Godzilla minus one. However, since we have the same director Minus oneI want a direct continuation of this story, not another reboot of the franchise.

This may seem strange, but I remember the Japanese director Ishirō Honda. He left such a big mark on Godzilla that many consider him the father of the character. Why not? He led the first Godzillaas well as several other favorite films in the canon such as King Kong vs Godzilla, Mothra vs Godzilla, Ghidorah, Three-headed monster and many other legendary films. In fact, many Godzilla’s best enemies came from Honda’s tenure as director.

However, do you know what Godzilla is in the Honda movie? didn’t direct? The second feature of Godzilla. Godzilla raids again (Also known as Gigantis, the Fire Monster), directed by Motoyoshi Oda.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Godzilla raids againbut it’s quite a departure from the first film. In the film, Godzilla battles his first opponent in Anguirus. This would lead to a long tradition of pitting Godzilla against another kaiju, and while I enjoy it, I’ve always wondered what it would have been like if Honda had made a second Godzilla film.

The tone has completely changed since Raids againand with Takashi Yamazaki directing the next Godzilla movie, I think we have a real opportunity to maintain that excellent dark tone set with Godzilla minus one.

Plus I just love all the characters in this movie. They are what really does Godzilla minus one shine and I want to know what happens next with Koichi, Noriko and everyone else. There are hints in Minus one that their story isn’t over yet, and I’d like to see where they go next after the latest startling conclusion.

Don’t want to see: another Godzilla edit

This goes some way to my last point, but I don’t want to see another Godzilla edit. The Rave era was actually a lot of fun as we got a lot of interpretations of the character.

We got the developing form in Shin Godzillaclumsy hippopotamus from anime from netflix Godzilla’s Spotand a slightly awkward version in animated Godzilla films. Plus, if you count Godzilla in the simultaneous MonsterVerse, we even have an agile Godzilla who can deliver medium suplex in King Kong.

However, I find Godzilla in Minus one being my absolute favorite of them as it is simple in design and motifs. It’s a creature that gets bigger over time, and it doesn’t really look like it’s stopped growing. We see him “destroyed” in Minus onebut his skin is still “alive” at the end of the film, hinting that there will be a sequel of sorts.

Why fix something that isn’t broken? I don’t think we need to see a whole new version of the character if we already have such a good version. This is why I would like to see Godzilla brought back rather than a new guy. Because how can you fix perfection?

Want to see: more information about where Godzilla came from

One thing I really don’t like seeing is origin stories for characters we already know and love. For example, although Andrew Garfield is my favorite version of Spider-Man.I’m not crazy about the two films he’s in. Like, did we really need this? to see Death of Uncle Ben again?

Anyone who knows anything about Spider-Man knows that the death of Uncle Ben is a turning point in the character’s origin story. So the retelling of this event in The Amazing Spider-Man when we had Tobey Maguire films a few years ago. I also like that this wasn’t repeated in the MCU Spider-Man films.

However, I’m going to contradict myself in that I do I want a potential Godzilla origin story Godzilla minus one follow up. I think Minus one eloquently introduced Godzilla without going into detail about who he actually became. But if the next film is a sequel, which I hope it will be, then I would really like for the scientists working on this version to actually figure out where Godzilla came from.

That’s because there’s a great scene there. Minus one where the scientists come up with theories on how to defeat Godzilla, and it was one of my favorite scenes in the entire movie. So if we had something like that, other than a scene where we find out how the radiation from World War II helped create this monster, I think that would be really cool. Who else is with me?

I don’t want to watch: Godzilla fights another monster

I already said before that I like it Godzilla raids againbut one problem I have with this – and most of Toho’s Godzilla films, really – is that Godzilla is the main antagonist in a Godzilla movie with no other kaiju involved.

In fact, looking back at the history of Godzilla, we Always get a solo Godzilla movie and then a movie where Big G meets another kaiju. With Godzilla (1954) we got Godzilla raids again immediately after this with Anguirus. WITH Godzilla 1985we got Godzilla vs Biollante like a follow-up film.

Of course you could argue that Godzilla minus one should Shin Godzilla when it comes to Toho films, but I would say that Minus one This is another reboot, not a continuation Shin Godzilla.

Not if we were to get a Godzilla movie that would be a sequel Minus onethen this will be the first time in history that we get a direct sequel to a Toho Godzilla movie that doesn’t have another kaiju for Godzilla to face.

I would love that because, again, Godzilla minus one more about the human characters than Godzilla himself. So even if Takashi Yamazaki’s next film is about Godzilla Not continuation Minus oneI would still find it odd since Yamazaki seems like a director more focused on the human drama than the monsters themselves.

Want to see: More amazing (and surprising) cost-effective special effects

Finally, after Godzilla minus one received the first Oscar for the series In terms of special effects, I imagine Toho would be more willing to give Yamazaki whatever he wants when it comes to budget.

However, as selfish as it may sound, I really hope they continue to give him a reasonable amount of money to work with since that’s what made him Godzilla minus one so special. When it turned out that Minus one had meager budget of $15 millionPeople were completely stunned, and for good reason. Like, how? How can a movie that looks SO good cost so little?

However, I guess it was financial constraints that made it possible to tell such a humane story, as Godzilla’s appearance in the film, while quite impressive, is relegated to highlights. This allows the story to breathe and makes the encounters with Godzilla especially frightening. Minus one.

So, despite the success of Godzilla, one would expect a BIGGER (read: more expensive) Godzilla movie to be made. Minus oneI would love to see the VFX team create movie magic on a budget again. Let’s see if this is even possible.
