Arne Slot makes another history: Liverpool beat Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool manager Arne Slot etched his name into the history books on Tuesday night as the Reds cruised to a 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

Liverpool maintained their 100 per cent record in the competition, with Slot producing another masterclass at Anfield.

The Dutchman has made an impressive start to his reign as Liverpool manager since replacing Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

After a goalless first-half draw, Luis Diaz opened the scoring with his first hat-trick in Liverpool colours, while Cody Gakpo also scored his first Champions League goal.

With the victory, Slote set a new record for most games won in a manager’s first 16 games in charge of a Premier League team.

The 46-year-old footballer won 14 victories in his short time at the helm of the Reds.

He has now broken the previous record set by Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, who each won 13 of their first 16 games in charge of Chelsea in 2004 and 2009 respectively.

Liverpool are leading the Premier League and have renewed the Champions League with 25 and 12 points respectively.

Slot’s only setbacks were a 1-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest and a 2-2 draw away to Premier League title rivals Arsenal.

No other team can boast 12 points from 12 in the Champions League season either.

Sporting Lisbon and Monaco are the Reds’ closest rivals on 10 points, but Aston Villa have an opportunity to level with them when they host Club Brugge on Wednesday night.

Speaking after the game, Slot said: “I think if you work in any club in the world, there is always pressure.

“So there is pressure on some clubs or some managers not to go down.

“Some people need to win a lot. There is always pressure in our position.

“That’s the pressure we put on ourselves because if you work for Liverpool or play for Liverpool, as a player or manager, you know the manager will probably be next and many other great players have set such high standards. here, so there’s always some pressure.

“But we also accept it because that’s what we want too.

“We want to be where we are now, we want to fight for everything and so you have to accept that if you work here or play here there is pressure.

“The other side is that if you work or play here, you can enjoy incredible evenings and enjoy it because today the atmosphere…

“I said last Saturday it was impressive, but I think today it was even more impressive.”
