Around 100 dockers on the River Clyde in Glasgow and Greenock have won a pay rise

About 100 dockers at Clydeport sites have won a pay rise, according to the union.

Unite confirmed on Wednesday that following wage negotiations, workers on the River Clyde would receive a total pay package of approximately 9.3%.

Around 100 staff at Glasgow’s King George V Dock and Greenock Ocean Terminal overwhelmingly backed the pay proposal.

Unite said the deal covers crane and terminal operators, pilots who move vessels on the River Clyde, engineers, estuary workers and deck workers.

The accepted proposal includes a 3% increase in basic pay, two extra days’ holiday, bonuses worth up to £1,000 if absence and profit targets are met, and a 50p-an-hour rise for crane operators.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Unite has successfully secured good pay conditions for our Clydeport on Clyde members.

“This is another important win and demonstrates how Unite is delivering better jobs, pay and conditions for dockworkers across Scotland.”

Clydeport cranes and workshops are owned by Peel Port Group.

Workers process and move containers, forest products, agricultural products, projects and bulk cargo from ships to shore for distribution to destination markets across Scotland.

Pat McIlvogue, industrial director at Unite, said: “Clydeport workers will benefit from a deal that will provide better pay, bonuses and holiday entitlements.

“This is welcome recognition of the skilled work of the dockers on the Clyde.”

The Peel Ports group has been contacted for comment.
