“We all need heroes to relate to”

Robbie Williams spoke about the influence PlaceboNancy Boy influenced him.

The 1997 track was the fourth single from their self-titled debut album. Using a homophobic slur in the title, it explored fluid sexuality and drugs, which Williams said “left him confused.”

The film, directed by BAFTA Award winner Oscar Sansom and set to screen in October, features candid interviews with the band as well as CCTV-style footage from celebrity fans including Benedict Cumberbatch. In addition to touching on the band’s history, it dives deeper into Placebo’s meaning, purpose, philosophy and influence over the band’s 30-year existence.

Last month frontman Brian Molko and bassist-guitarist Stefan Olsdal appeared at the film’s premiere to discuss its themes. – which include addiction, mental health, gender politics, and rare and never-before-seen footage from the film chronicling the group’s relationship with David Bowie.

“Inviting Benedict Cumberbatch to this event was a real coup,” Molko said at the event. “He was a man we found out about through mutual friends who was a big fan of his. So it’s great to be so surprised.

“One of my favorite moments was when David Bowie asked the question: “What motivates a musician to do this extremely antisocial act?” He asked a question and Robbie (Williams) answers the question. This is a good example of us trying to do something that plays with form.”

Recalling discussions about mental health in the early 2000s, Molko reflected: “It wasn’t a conversation at all,” adding: “It was just, ‘Get your act together, get on stage.’” What we’re doing can make your mental health very, very fragile.”

Williams has made similar remarks throughout his career, most recently after the death of Liam Payne, stating that “his trials and tribulations were very similar to mine.”
