‘He promised to bring peace here’: Palestinians watch results in temporary shelter

Gathered around a television screen in a temporary shelter in the town of Khan Yunis in the central Gaza Strip, Palestinians watch the US election results closely in video captured by our affiliate network NBC News.

Some expressed deep concern about Donald Trump’s victory, recalling his support for Israel during his first term, while others expressed hope that the Republican could be the one to end more than a year of war in the enclave.

“He has given the greatest support for Israel by a president in the entire world,” said Mohamad Odeh, a 25-year-old medical student.

“So I didn’t think Trump would be a good president and would support us Palestinians living here in the Gaza Strip.”

“But after listening to his speech and the election campaign… he always promised that he would give peace and bring peace here,” he said. “I hope he’ll be honest after everything he’s said.”

“He said he was going to end the war,” Hussam al-Sharif, 19, who was forced to flee his home in southern Gaza by the Israeli offensive, told NBC.

“He is a man of his word. Once he commands, no one can do anything except obey him.”

Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, said in a letter to Trump today: “We look forward to working with you to achieve peace, security and prosperity in our region.”

He added: “We are confident that, under your leadership, the United States will support the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.”
