‘What a surprise’ – people’s reactions to the confirmation of the general election date

Taoiseach Simon Harris has finally announced his intention to call General election this Friday, November 8th.

The Prime Minister told RTE Six One that he would call for the dissolution of the party. Post on Friday with the hope that Election Day will be Friday, November 29th.

Rumors have swirled in recent weeks about general election dates, but Harris said the finance bill had to pass before he could call for President Michael D. Higgins to dissolve the House of Representatives.

With the Finance Bill passed on Tuesday, it is no surprise that the Prime Minister has confirmed his intention to call a general election this week.

Indeed, many took to social media to share their thoughts on the highly anticipated announcement.

One person wrote in X, previously on Twitter: “TDs have been campaigning since the summer!”

Another said: “I thought it was caused by the amount of leaflets coming in the mail, my fault.”

Apparently people weren’t surprised by the announcement, with another person commenting: “What a surprise. Was/is there anyone who didn’t know the date.”

Of course, it was a big day for election news around the world as Donald Trump was confirmed as the 47th President of the United States.

Following the confirmation of general election dates, also released by the Taoiseach on Wednesday, some took to social media to say: “The news from the US is making it difficult to show enthusiasm.”

Others, however, supported Trump’s campaign slogan, saying: “Make Ireland Great Again!”
